DEVCOM Hosts AANHPI Heritage Month Event at Aberdeen Proving Ground
The U.S. Combat Capabilities Development Command recently hosted a special event to celebrate Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This event, held at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, aimed to honor the contributions of individuals from these communities to the history of the United States.
Brig. Gen. John Cushing, the commander of DEVCOM, highlighted the importance of recognizing the service and cultural heritage of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. He emphasized the diversity and strength that these communities bring to the fabric of American society.
The event was organized by the DEVCOM Office of Workplace Culture and Equity, with over 30 volunteers dedicating approximately 40 hours to ensure its success. Attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in various aspects of AANHPI culture, including language lessons, food samples, and cultural demonstrations.
Julia Chang, a member of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, served as the guest speaker and emphasized the significance of cultural heritage events. She encouraged attendees to embrace diversity and open-mindedness, highlighting the importance of acceptance and appreciation.
Chang also shared her personal mission to make a difference within the AANHPI community, particularly as a mother raising three young children. She emphasized the importance of teaching children to embrace their heritage while also recognizing their potential to achieve their dreams.
Brig. Gen. Cushing echoed Chang’s sentiments, emphasizing the unity of vision and shared Army Values that bring diverse communities together. He underscored the importance of celebrating both the strength of diversity and the unity of purpose within the military.
