EU Mandates Speed-Limiting AI Tech in All Cars: What You Need to Know

Are you ready for a future where your car can slow down on its own if you’re speeding? Well, that future is now a reality in the EU, as all cars are now required to be fitted with speed-limiting AI technology.

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems use AI, GPS data, and onboard cameras to monitor your speed in real-time and intervene if you exceed the speed limit. This technology can assess road markings to determine the speed limit for the road you’re on and can provide warnings, increase resistance on the accelerator pedal, or even slow the vehicle down to ensure compliance.

While the UK has opted out of this law, manufacturers will still need to install ISA systems in cars sold in the UK to comply with EU regulations. However, drivers in the UK will have the option to override or turn off the system if they choose to do so.

In addition to speed-limiting AI technology, new AI speed cameras are being rolled out in the UK. These cameras can “see inside your car” and identify passengers, check for seatbelt usage, phone usage, and even detect who is behind the wheel. The cameras use multiple lenses and AI technology to automatically analyze images for driving offenses and send them to the police for enforcement.

The introduction of these technologies aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by speeding and distracted driving. While some may have concerns about privacy and control, proponents argue that these measures are necessary to enforce road laws and protect all road users.

As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see more innovations in road safety and traffic enforcement. Whether you’re a fan of these new regulations or not, it’s clear that the future of driving is becoming increasingly automated and regulated.
