The Value of Public Libraries: A Closer Look at the Weber County Library System

Are public libraries still relevant in today’s digital age? The answer is a resounding yes, especially in communities like Weber County, where the library system is thriving and evolving to meet the needs of its patrons.

According to Director Lynnda Wangsgard, the Weber County Library System is experiencing increased usage, with over 2.5 million items circulated last year. What’s even more impressive is that a third of those items were e-materials, showing that the library is adapting to the digital age.

But the library is more than just a repository of books and resources. It serves as a hub for community engagement and enrichment, offering a wide range of programs and services for people of all ages and backgrounds.

From tai chi and Zumba classes to Dungeons & Dragons sessions, the library’s programming calendar is packed with opportunities for learning and socializing. In fact, over 1,200 programs were offered in just four months, with attendance growing by 69%.

One of the library’s key focuses is literacy, offering programs for English as a second language, adult literacy, and computer literacy. Wangsgard emphasizes the importance of social literacy as well, helping people communicate and navigate the professional world.

Despite the rise of digital media, physical books still make up 70% of circulated materials in Weber County. And contrary to popular belief, young people are among the library’s most frequent visitors, with over half of Gen Zers and millennials visiting a public library in the past year.

Wangsgard recognizes the importance of engaging with children and teens early on to foster a love of learning. By providing a welcoming and diverse array of programs and resources, the library is able to connect with the community on multiple levels.

So, the next time you’re looking for a place to learn, connect, or simply escape into a good book, consider visiting your local public library. It’s more than just a building full of books – it’s a vibrant community hub that continues to evolve and thrive in the digital age.
