LSU Museum of Art’s Neighborhood Arts Project: Bringing Art to Underserved Communities

The LSU Museum of Art is making waves in the Baton Rouge community with its innovative Neighborhood Arts Project. Bringing art directly to underserved neighborhoods, this program is changing lives and inspiring creativity in participants of all ages.

Since 2012, the museum has been hosting free art activities under pop-up tents at various sites throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. The goal is to make art accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. From kids to seniors, the Neighborhood Arts Project is reaching a diverse audience and making a lasting impact.

This summer, the program is in full swing, with activities inspired by the museum’s current exhibitions. Participants are creating space-themed pieces to coincide with the exhibit “Fierce Planets: Work from the Studio Art Quilt Associates.” In addition to art activities, the program also features visits from experts like Aaron Ryan from LSU’s Department of Physics & Astronomy, who provides interactive science education events.

The success of the Neighborhood Arts Project has led the museum to consider expanding the program to include visits to the museum itself. By bringing participants to the museum, they can experience the exhibits that inspired their artwork firsthand. This expansion could provide a unique opportunity for community members to engage with art in a new way.

As the program continues to grow and evolve, the LSU Museum of Art remains committed to fostering a love of art in all members of the community. From kids to seniors, everyone is welcome to participate in the Neighborhood Arts Project and explore their creative side. This ageless circle of art lovers is what makes this program so special and impactful.

So, if you’re looking for a way to get involved in the local art scene and make a difference in your community, look no further than the LSU Museum of Art’s Neighborhood Arts Project. Join in on the fun and discover the joy of creating art with your neighbors.
