Teens Give Back to Operation Basketball Through My Chi My Future Initiative
The power of sports to transform lives is on full display at Ellis Park in Bronzeville, where Cordarro Harris and Zedrick Carter are using basketball to give back to their community through Operation Basketball. These two young teens have found a sense of purpose and belonging in the program, using the sport as a tool to build confidence and develop important life skills.
Operation Basketball, a recipient of a micro-grant from the city as part of the My Chi My Future initiative, is expanding its hoops therapy program to reach even more teens and provide them with a positive outlet to stay off the streets. Mike Holder, the cofounder of Operation Basketball, emphasizes the importance of offering meaningful programming to keep young people engaged and supported.
The impact of these grants extends beyond the basketball court, with organizations like Sacred Ground Ministries and Wood St. Collective using their funding to provide valuable resources and opportunities to at-risk youth in Chicago. Mary Long, the founder of Sacred Ground Ministries, started her organization in honor of her son and is dedicated to helping children in her community stay on a positive path.
From culinary classes to urban farming, these programs are not only enriching the lives of young people but also revitalizing and empowering communities across the city. Martell Collins, founder of Wood St. Collective, is grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in his neighborhood and provide job opportunities and access to healthy food options.
As Harris and Carter prepare for college, they remain committed to serving their community and making a difference this summer. Their dedication and passion are a testament to the impact that youth-based organizations can have on the lives of young people in Chicago. With the support of grants and initiatives like My Chi My Future, these programs are able to continue their important work and create a brighter future for the next generation.
